We’re looking for a Bid and Design Manager to join our growing team within our Lighting and Grid business. Our Bid and Design Manager will be someone who has great experience within street lighting from design, installation through to LED replacement as well as industry knowledge across the electrical distribution network.


As Bid and Design Manager you’ll report directly into the Head of Lighting and Grid, developing a centralised approach to bidding of large highways lighting and electrical network connections project tenders for local authorities as well as housing and commercial developers. Working in our Lighting and Grid Connections team you will take the lead on developing our proposals from PQQ stage to contract award working collaboratively with the local delivery team at all stages. You’ll also be responsible for establishing a hub of expertise covering lighting and electrical design and coordination of the large contract sales pipeline.


Lighting and grid are part of the bigger Energy Infrastructure Services organisation that deliver exciting and forward thinking solutions for commercial and domestic developments, new Garden Towns and Smart Cities. As Bid and Design Manager you’ll be able to take advantage of these extensive networks and relationships in order to drive joined up solutions, positive outcomes for our business and customers.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Proactive stakeholder management to manage and influence senior internal and external relationships and negotiations in relation to Infrastructure Tenders.
  • Support negotiation of satisfactory contractual terms and conditions to third parties for projects within the Infrastructure Services Business.
  • Adopt a pricing strategy that maximises success while delivering sustainable margins.
  • Working closely and in harmony with other members of the Energy Infrastructure Services Team to ensure a collaborative approach in supporting strategic projects and growth opportunities as needed. 
  • Keep abreast of, and apply as appropriate, any relevant changes in policy and procedures relating to the Bid and Design Teamwork area.
  • Ensure that agreed customer tender timelines are met while obtaining appropriate internal approvals by working with other business managers to ensure delivery of profit and loss performance.
  • Develop relationships with new/existing customers to grow the business and/or to obtain repeat business, as well as attend meetings with both internal and external customers, as required and at senior level
  • To promote and contribute to an environment which strives for continuous improvement and the implementation of best practice.

What we need from you

  • Demonstrable experience of managing large scale tender from identification of opportunities through to successful award, ideally within Street Lighting and Infrastructure projects however a background in a related industry would be applicable. 
  • An understanding of the engineering, technical and operational requirements relevant to the industry, as well as a good knowledge of standard forms of contract and their obligations in respect of contract approvals.
  • Financial and commercial awareness related to large scale tenders along with the ability to communicate effectively with customers, colleagues and operational employees at a senior level.
  • In order to manage the bid and design activity effectively, it will be necessary to make decisions and meet tight deadlines. The ability to negotiate with and influence key stakeholders (both internally and externally) will also be imperative.

  • This role is home based with travel to our Stoke and Derby sites required
